I have always maintained (as long as I can remember being in charge of maintaining it anyhow) that I am a night person. It seems that when I attempt to let my body decide when to sleep and wake that my awake time generally would run from around 10AM - 2PM. Of course living in this world it is hard to maintain that time schedule, so I set alarms in the morning and attempt to go to bed early. This has resulted, so far, in my being tired a lot in the morning which start sometime around 6:30/7 and nights still lasting to between 12:30 and 1.
Obviously this is not the healthiest setup. We are not meant to be tired most of the time we are awake. With Gideon now in the family and Heather returning to work I realized it was the right time to make a change that I, like many night people, would never admit to wanting - even though we might. (No, that was not an admission!) It is time for me to become a morning person.
Unlike many things in life I actually did little to no research on this before getting started. The past few weeks as Heather has started to get up and stay up earlier in preparation for work I have joined her to a degree. Then last week I pretty much did not get up out of bed earlier, but instead concentrated on being more alert and awake while staying in bed. This is not some method I learned from anywhere that will magically make things work, it just is what I ended up doing.
So, this week has started my first week of becoming a morning person. My new schedule has me up at about 5:10-5:15AM. I am not sure what my new bedtime is as of yet. That one is hard to change due to it traditionally being the time of day I get to myself. I start the morning with getting Gideon fed. This is currently lasting up close to time he needs to be getting ready to go out the door, which I also help with. Once Gideon and Heather are out the door I then have exercise time assigned. This does not count as time to myself as I do not like exercise. I finish, take a shower, eat, and head to work. It is worth noting that the time when I get out of the shower will likely average anytime from 6:45 to 7:15. Depending on what I eat this gets me out the door between 7:00 and 7:30, just as I have been lately. (I end up working through lunch as a balance.)
I plan to watch how things go for the next few weeks and possibly write some entries relating to the changes and what they seem to do to me. For now I would be happy to hear any insights from others that may have made the same change, or tried and failed. Of course, other comments and thoughts are always welcome as well.
