Myhr Family Road Adventures Part 1

Travel day 1 was supposed to be an easy one. 243 miles and under four hours. We’d been set up in a park close to our home while moving out and getting it ready to rent. Getting into that spot and out of the house was difficult, but that’s a story for another day.

We packed up for the road, nothing like a well-oiled machine. This surprised nobody as it was our first travel day and we weren’t even really moved in. Adam’s meeting schedule changed at the last moment, which added some complexity. As our first travel day, we hadn’t yet figured out how the kids could best help. Gideon swept off the roof, Cecilia made sure everything was in the sink or tub in the bathroom, and Ephraim pushed the buttons for the slides. We did realize there wasn’t a ton to do. Heather did a bunch of packing things into corners, and Adam got all the electronics secure for the drive, but compared to a pop-up tear-down was really easy.

The drive itself was not bad at all, in some ways. The kids all got to discover life without residential broadband, specifically the fastest available. The mobile hotspot did a decent job, but service got spotty at times as we got further from Denver. Traffic was also a factor. That four hours? It’s with no traffic. We left Elizabeth, Colorado, for Lingle, Wyoming, on a Friday at lunchtime. We made it to about Longmont by 4ish and stopped for an early dinner – planned initially as a lunch. It was the last visit with Heather’s grandparents on our way out of town.

Setting up at the other end was not a good time. It was close to 9 by the time we got there. That included missing the turn and having to drive almost an extra ten minutes to get turned around and come back. We were in the dark at the edge of a storm. The solution we have for leveling the camper sunk into the slightly wet and somewhat soft dirt. We adapted, barely.

Still new to everything, we teamed up on setting up the outside, trying to get the kids to stay in the truck until we finished. The lightning flashing nearby and light rain helped convince them. After leveling the trailer, another minor issue popped up when trying to connect the sewer line. For some unknown reason, our 45-degree clear adapter wasn’t sealing. Not wanting to troubleshoot at this time, Adam used a straight clear one and called it good enough. By contrast, the inside was fairly uneventful. A TV got set up for the kids to watch a show, and everyone got to bed. Late.

Pony Soldier RV Park was almost a tranquil little place. The only issue was the noise from the nearby train tracks. The very busy, nearby train tracks. The park wasn’t busy, but there also wasn’t much to do onsite. There was no playground, and laundry was not available. The kids did find a couple of little boys of similar age to play with, which helped the time at the campsite after school go a little easier for them.

Our first big adventure was Fort Laramie. We got a slow start due to getting in so late but made it in time to see most of a presentation on cannons. Seeing the cannon fire a blank stood out to both Gideon and Cecilia as a highlight of the day, though Gideon pointed out it was inefficient to require a team of four. After the presentation and Heather running to get our masks from the car, we picked up Junior Ranger books for the three kids and Gideon planned our route to get through the books.

Ephraim really liked it when we started going inside the buildings and seeing dioramas of how things were when the fort was operational in the late 1800s. In addition to the army buildings and ruins, a traditional tipi from the era was set up on the grounds. Another thing that stood out to the kids was the contrast between how officers and enlisted lived.

For Heather and Adam, hearing an elderly lady sharing her story of growing up in a small house with only one wood stove and how it heated up the entire house was a highlight. This was during a part of the junior ranger tour where the books had the kids think about why there was both a fireplace and wood stove in every room of the houses.

The visit was deemed a success, with everyone learning something and enjoying the time there, some more than they thought they would.

Blame the holidays.

That’s what I’m going to do here, I’m going to blame the holidays. I just noticed I haven’t posted since essentially Thanksgiving. I’ve been barely keeping up with entering the weekly posts during this time. Truth be told I’ll notice that I missed Monday morning for a post and for some reason decide that means I can’t post until the following Monday morning.

I plan to change that. I may post a couple a week for a bit to catch back up some as well since it’s pretty far behind at this point. Maybe not though, we’ll see. I do have one scheduled for tomorrow morning already. Depending on how the afternoon here goes I may also schedule the next few weeks. I do need to get some more titles though, my backlog of titles is getting shorter.

One way I think I’ll change it is to change the feel a little. I’ll keep the “TWB” title as it seems fine to me, but I’ll stop trying to make it so much about bedtime. Honestly anyone that’s actually been reading knows it hasn’t been strictly about bedtime for quite a while. In fact if I don’t manage to capture the shows and stories right away they basically are lost to time. What happened in the family during the day isn’t as hard to discern, so I’ll allow myself to officially switch focus. With it being so far behind I might even be able to talk about some “upcoming” things.

That’s all for today. Watch here for a post tomorrow, like I said it’s already scheduled and will go up.

This Weeks Bedtime (TWB) Ep 2

Monday Gideon picked Jake & the Neverland Pirates. Cecilia didn’t get to watch because, well, let’s just say she had a rough night.
Cecilia had Mom read Words. Dad had already spent a long time trying to calm he down by then and didn’t read her a story.
Gideon had Mom read 500 Hats and Dad read Grinch Stole Christmas.

Tuesday Cecilia picked Jake & the Neverland Pirates.
Cecilia had Mom read “” while Dad read “No Place Like Space.”
Gideon asked Dad to read Grinch, but was kidding. Dad ended up reading 500 Hats and Mom read Grinch.

For a show we had Meteor and the Mighty Monster Trucks while driving to the dealer. (About half of the DVD.)
For books we had “Clifford the Firehouse Dog” and “Santa duck” on the way home.

Gideon watched Sheriff Callie’s Wild West and then heard “Splat the Cat on With the Show.”
When Mom got home she read Cecilia “Words” and Gideon “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.”

Friday Cecilia pickled Jake & the Neverland Pirates.
Cecilia had both Mom and Dad read the Golden Books “Words”.
Gideon was told by Dad he had to pick a short one because it was later than planned. Dad read “Gertrude McFuzz” while Mom read “The Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Saturday we made a long trip to get dinner after church and got home a little later than normal. Gideon picked Jake & the Neverland Pirates.
Cecilia didn’t get a story from Dad. Mom read “Pip Goes to London” and “Chipmunk’ s Birthday Party”.

Gideon let Dad choose because it was very late. Dad picked “There’s No Place Like Space.” Mom read him “Clifford in the Circus”.

Sorry I didn’t get the weekend readings recorded very well. Heather might edit her entries for the weekend. I’m pretty sure Saturday ended up being a no story day but could just be remembering wrong. (It has been updated by Heather)

New post series.

Anyone who has preschoolers in this day and age knows that some nights a 30 minute TV show is worth the cost of an entire months cable subscription. Our nighttime routine has become a half hour show followed by bedtime stories.

The show so far has been a Disney Junior show. (25 minutes or so.) As they are commercial free they are generally followed by 5 minutes of station promos. In these promos is usually a 30-60 second short. At some point this 5 minutes segment became known as the “wait.”

Stories at this point consist of each child getting a story from Mom and a separate one from Dad. The boys are usually together first, then the parents swap rooms. Pretty soon, especially with Gideon, we should change this up to part of a longer story.

There are exceptions. Late nights don’t always result in both, or either, bedtime event. If one parent is not home for bedtime the other usually reads two stories, one picked by each child, to both of them.

Where am I going with this? It started with a desire to prove that Gideon really was going overboard with wanting Dr Suess’s 500 ahts of Bartholomew Cubbins. Then I wished I had come up with the idea years ago. Finally I decided I’d just go forward with the idea. The result is going to be a weekly update on the standard entertainment for the week..

Starting tomorrow.

GJM Airlines Flight Success

So in March Gideon turned four.  We actually ended up with 3 different celebrations for his birthday.

The first was just a small one with the four of us on his actual birthday.  We had his favorite foods for dinner (MacNCheese, Hot Dogs, Raspberries, and Pineapple).  Then he opened some a couple gifts from us and a few cards/packages he had received from family out of state. He loved the camera we got him.  Now we just need to get Cecilia one and hope she doesn’t break his before we do that.  (I scored a great deal on a point and shoot for him.)

The second was the our “flight” on Sunday afternoon with family, family friends, and a couple of friends from school.  We went with his love of airplanes and had an airplane themed party.   I found a printable party pack at simonemadeit.com which I used for the invitations and a lot of the decorations.  We had a homemade ice cream cake in the shape of an airplane and did a couple of fun activities.  Overall I think it turned out well and he loved it.  Detailed pictures below.

Finally, we celebrated on Tuesday with my parents after they got in where he got a few more presents from them and a couple others I hadn’t gotten wrapped in time for the party on Sunday.

It was a fun week of celebrations and he seemed to like it all.

Mid-October Memories 2012

Unfortunately I wasn’t feeling the greatest Sunday afternoon so I’ll give a quick update mid-week this week.  This past weekend we went to the farm where we have been CSA members this year to pick up our final “regular season” box of produce, get some pumpkins, and some chickens on Saturday.  It was a little bit of a chilly Saturday but the kids still enjoyed it.

Afterwards we went out to lunch at a restaurant.  The kids seemed to enjoy the restaurant and when we asked Gideon if it was a good one his reply was “Yes.  Because I picked it.”

Some of my favorite little memories of the week:

– While shopping at Home Depot Gideon had to ask everyone we met what their name was.  Employee or otherwise.  When they asked his name in return his reply was always “Gideon James Myhr”.  Have to give the full one.  Hopefully he will continue to be friendly and outgoing as he grows.

– Cecilia our “Little Miss Independent” always wants to do things by herself.  It is great to see her desire to figure it out although very frustrating at times as well.  Since she is so independent we decided to try some pull-ups this weekend so she could do it herself.  Ironically she wanted them to be like a diaper most of the time. (Somehow the one’s I had picked had tabs similar to diapers although a little easier to “restick”).  Although she did like doing it completely herself once or twice and convincing her that we need the diaper at bedtime was a bit of a challenge.

Well that is a couple short memories for you.  And I’ll leave you with some pictures.  The following were the cookies that came as part of the kids meals at the restaurant Saturday. Literally as big as their heads as you can see.  Enjoy.

Until next time.

Another Week Flies By

Well it’s hard to believe but it has been another week already since I last wrote.  Some days time seems to go so slowly especially when little toddlers don’t want to listen and other times it just flies on by.

I don’t have a lot of time but will share a few moments from the week that have made me smile:

– Today before getting out of the car the kids had to hug each other just because.

– Just a prime example of the two very different personalities of our kids.  Both were faced with the same problem earlier today.  The balloon they were playing with ended up out of reach in their cousins pack-n-play.  Cecilia’s response – Climb up the stairs reach through the railing and start trying to get the balloon herself. (Note: I stepped in so she didn’t fall down the stairs so don’t know if she would have figured it out eventually or not.)  Gideon’s response – Ask his cousin to help him reach it.

– Playing in the “castle” (under the dining room table) with my two little kids for a little while.  I had to call it quits when my neck started hurting.  Adults just don’t fit as easily as little toddlers.

– Gideon having talked about wanting to be spiderman for Halloween for at least a week once in the aisle of costumes decides on something else.  Go figure.

I’m constantly amazed at how quickly they are growing up.  Cecilia is starting to use full phrases.  I can’t remember what the one was yesterday that made us really go that was good right now but I do remember it happening.  And Gideon continues to amaze me with his logic.  Several times this week he has strung several ideas together in a logical order.  Unfortunately I can’t think of a good example at the moment.  If I come up with one I’ll have to add another post but hey I never claimed to be a night/evening person and my brain has started to shut down for the night.

So until next time.

And Time Flies By

Well as you can tell by the fact that it has been two weeks since my last post my hopes for    blogging regularly is definitely not going to be a daily thing at this point in time.  Hard to believe it has been two weeks but then it has been a busy few.

I had a couple of days in there where I wasn’t feeling good in fact was home from work two days.  Although in line with my theme of trying to find the good I looked at it as God’s way of telling me I needed some down time.  Now if I could figure out how to slow down without getting sick that would probably be better.

So I guess I’ll share a few of the things that have made me smile recently.  A good reminder for myself as well.

Gideon yesterday: “Is that truck peeing?”  There was a truck spraying water on dirt to keep it from getting too dusty.

Both kids “That’s funny” and then they start giggling.

The things kids remember.  From our trip to the Twin Cities Corn Maze in Champlin which includes a corn pit, hay ride, and petting zoo: “The cow pooped.” Because yes the cow pooped right in front of us.

Cecilia saying she needs to go potty then going and sitting down still fully clothed.  Yes for some reason she thought she could go with her clothes still on.

Well until next time hopefully one of those will help you smile too.
